Mitragynine causes yohimbe-like stimulant activity, which gives kratom stimulating properties in low doses. 7-Hydroxymitragynine acts as a mu-opioid receptor agonist, mu-opioid receptors are increasingly stimulated as the dosage rises. This is why in higher doses we see sedative effects, and also explains what gives kratom its opiate like effects.
